There are drinks that feel like a small morning ritual, and this is one of them. A Banana Matcha Latte is the perfect intersection of two worlds: the deep, earthy green of matcha, and the creamy, natural sweetness of ripe banana. No added sugar, no machines, and no prior knowledge of the Japanese tea world.
This isn't a traditional drink in the classic sense, but a modern twist that has rightfully taken over our feeds. The frozen banana does all the work here: it sweetens, cools, and provides a milkshake-like texture, while the matcha gives color, depth, and clean energy. In the OOMAME version, we prepare it with real matcha, whisked properly, so you get a cup that feels like a cafe experience, right from your kitchen.

Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon (approx. 2g) matcha powder
- 60ml hot water, approx. 80°C, not boiling
- 1 ripe banana, frozen and sliced
- 200ml milk of choice: cow's milk, oat milk, or almond milk
- Ice to taste
- Optional: 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup for those who prefer it sweeter
Instructions
1. Whisk the Matcha
Sift one teaspoon of matcha into a bowl through a fine sieve to prevent lumps. Pour in hot, not boiling, water and whisk with a bamboo whisk in a rapid zig-zag motion for about 20 seconds, until a smooth, uniform green foam is formed.
2. Prepare the Base
Fill a tall glass with ice, add the frozen banana slices, and pour the milk over them.
3. Pour and Serve
Slowly pour the whisked matcha over the milk, and enjoy the green swirl that forms. Stir just before drinking, and the banana will provide sweetness and creaminess without a drop of sugar.
Chef's Tip
A very ripe and frozen banana is key. The riper the banana before freezing, the stronger the natural sweetness, and no sweetener is needed at all. Always keep a few sliced and frozen bananas in a bag in the freezer, and you'll have a ready base for a drink or smoothie every morning.
Variations and Adaptations
Hot Version
Without ice, with steamed hot milk. Suitable for cooler days, and the matcha remains the same.
Smoothie Version
Blend everything together in a blender instead of layering. You get a thicker, creamier drink, closer to a healthy milkshake.
Protein Version
Add a scoop of neutral or vanilla-flavored protein powder to the base. Turns the drink into a full breakfast after a workout.
A Small Moment of Culture
Matcha is a finely ground green tea leaf powder, a centuries-old Japanese tradition that accompanies the tea ceremony. Unlike regular tea, here you drink the entire leaf, and therefore get more flavor, more color, and clean, balanced energy. The Banana Matcha takes this traditional raw material and connects it to an everyday, simple moment, and that's exactly what OOMAME loves: authentic tradition that easily enters your kitchen.
Good to know: Matcha is naturally vegan and gluten-free, and contains natural caffeine.
